The motivation

Before I participated in this opportunity, I interned locally at Johnson Matthey in Dundee (Scotland), which inspired me to join the sector. I originally trained as an engineer, predominantly in manufacturing field, so it was a big leap for me to pave my future in renewable energy sector.

The placement

I obtained a number of invaluable experiences during this period but if I had to choose one it would be a feasibility study for wind farms in Azerbaijan. This task combined using all the knowledge I had learnt throughout my course and strategically applying it to a real context. I not only learnt the technical aspects of wind farm setting, but also about the importance of teamwork. Within this role, I also had the opportunity to learn from a wind farm site election specialist, who sat next to me each day imparting his knowledge.

The location

My placement was in the beautiful location of Puglia, a region in Southern Italy. I have fond memories of being there and remember how wonderful and friendly the local people were.

The impact

Apart from improving my job prospects, allowing me to attract a higher income and having a better life, this placement also influenced me in terms of GREEN forward thinking. I mean it shaped me and made me who I am today. I can now be a better advocator for the world, no matter what the political situation is. I always have hope because I’ve gained this knowledge and I’ve been working in the clean industry ever since. I’m now one of those contributors transforming our society so that we can have a better low carbon world.

Without any doubt, I’d highly recommend RiSE International (formerly REY Europe) for someone looking to gain their hands-on experience in their respective field. My experience was very positive from the beginning as Marcus (liaison at that time) was very helpful and matched my capabilities to my placement. He paid attention to details, and corresponded well with the local team in Italy. Everything was close to perfect, so I literally have nothing to complain about.
