I developed an appreciation for the profound impact that elders, driven by their passion and wisdom, can have on environmental initiatives and community engagement.
The motivation
I saw it as an exceptional opportunity to gain international work experience, broaden my skill set, and further align my academic and career aspirations by collaborating with professionals in my field and embracing the unique learning and networking opportunities it offers.
The placement
My work placement was at the Society Promoting Environmental Conservation (SPEC). I carried out a range of tasks to support environmental initiatives and community engagement.
I organised and categorised essential documents related to fundraising, grants, partnerships and sponsorships, to ensure streamlined access to crucial information.
I conducted research on grants and projects with a similar focus to the Elder’s Circle project, which provided valuable insights for future work.
I carried out interviews with elders actively involved in environmental efforts, which served as the foundation for the Elder’s Circle
social media campaign.
As part of this campaign, I used my creative skills to design visually appealing social media posters, incorporating feedback and suggestions to optimize their impact. I developed the Social Media Campaign Plan for the Elder’s Circle, infusing innovative ideas and strategic approaches.
I was an active participant in team discussions at SPEC, and contributed to the project’s success.
The location
I loved Vancouver’s breath taking natural beauty and the serene atmosphere it offered. The city’s proximity to stunning mountains, lush forests, and the Pacific Ocean provided opportunities for outdoor adventures and moments of tranquility.
The friendly nature of the people I encountered during my stay added to the overall positive experience, making me feel welcomed.


The impact
My placement in Vancouver will undoubtedly benefit me professionally by providing a global perspective, enhancing my adaptability, and equipping me with practical skills and confidence for future roles.
I developed an appreciation for the profound impact that elders, driven by their passion and wisdom, can have on environmental initiatives and community engagement.
My biggest achievement was contributing to the successful execution of the Elder’s Circle social media campaign, where I designed engaging visuals and a strategic campaign plan. This experience reaffirmed my belief in the transformative power of effective communication and storytelling to drive positive change within communities and the environment, a lesson I intend to apply in my future career.
