The likelihood of receiving an opportunity for work experience abroad is slim. I advise any students that are interested, to put their fears and worries aside and have a go.
The motivation
I wanted an opportunity to see what it’s like working in a different environment within my business course.
The desire to meet new people, learn about the culture, see the city and use my secondary school Spanish to its fullest potential also influenced my decision.
The placement
I worked with Jetwalk, they provide Segway/bike tours around Seville. My main task were assisting on tours, completing bike contracts and communicating with locals and tourists.
I was also involved with the management of tills and producing marketing content for social media.
It has enhanced a variety of transferable soft skills, including time management, decision-making, and teamworking. I now have experience on ways to communicate with different types of customers. This will be essential both at university and in the future workforce.
The location
Seville was the perfect city, home to some of the country’s famed traditions like flamenco. From the lovely food, architecture, weather, culture and activities, there’s something here for everyone.
Visiting places like the Royal Alcazar of Seville, developed my cultural awareness and how the city was made to be a blend between the Islamic and Christian religion after the Christian conquest of Seville was something I found very interesting and mesmerizing.
The impact
I believe my placement will benefit me in the future as it has provided me with first-hand experience in a business environment in a different country.
The likelihood of receiving an opportunity for work experience abroad is slim. I advise any students that are interested, to put their fears and worries aside and have a go. When on placement, remain attentive and take notes as you go to retain the most out of this experience.
For me, it was an amazing experience that I will cherish for the rest of my life, where I was able to meet many lovely people.
