“My placement will help me in the future: I now have experience of working in the IT industry and with international customers who do not speak the same language. I learnt how to juggle different projects at once.”
The motivation
I applied for the placement as I thought it would be a great learning experience and opportunity to gain knowledge and expertise within the IT industry. I also thought that it would give me insight into what University life would feel like and would help teach me how to live independently and self-study.
The placement
I worked at a marketing automation company which owns some publishing houses. The company advertises and creates videos and leaflets to promote their affiliate programme as well. The videos and posters are edited by the team members of Groost. My general tasks were to boost posts using the Facebook business manager tool to promote ‘First Class Publishing’ and write Facebook posts to promote a new article on Improovio. I used a marketing automation software called ‘Marketo’ to create newsletters, smart campaigns, smart lists and databases. I also extended the lifetime of posts by increasing the budget and end date using the business manager tool.
The location
The weather was beautiful while I was in Prague although on some days it did rain. The scenery and city were great place. I really liked Wenceslas Square Town and the parks in Prague. The people were also extremely kind and hospitable in Prague.

The impact
My biggest learning experience was getting to know what it feels like to work in the IT industry and learning how to use software, such as Marketo, to simplify day to day tasks. One of my biggest achievements was suggesting an improvement for the Improovio website which was to add a new reviews page. This was considered by the CEO and discussed with the web designers of the company.
I think my placement will help me in the future particularly as I now have experience of working with international customers who do not speak the same language. It also gave me experience of working in the IT industry and I learnt how to juggle different projects at once. I want to go to university after I have completed my IT course and plan to explore IT Consultancy jobs in the future. My advice for future participants would be to learn some of the language and culture before travelling to that destination.
