The motivation
I’d never been abroad before. I was really nervous and didn’t know what to expect. I was worried about everything; the flight, the food, the language barrier. In reality, the experience was life changing. The people were so friendly and it was great to socialise and understand a different approach to doing things.
The placement
I gained experience installing air con, underfloor heating, solar panels and electrics. We were mainly working in new houses that had just been built, and through travelling to each job I got to see lots of the area we were staying in.
The location
In my spare time, we went to the beach and explored the region. We did a day trip to Seville, which was beautiful.
The experience has made me more confident and independent. I have improved my communication skills, through talking to my colleagues who didn’t speak much English.
The impact
When I took up Electrical at College, I wasn’t sure whether it was what I wanted to do, but I needed to do something. Spending time in Spain made me realise I do want to carry on working in electrics.

My placement has definitely changed my life. It opened my eyes to new ways of doing things, has made me clear about what I want to do next and helped me get an apprenticeship.
