The placement
I have assisted on a few projects. the main one being a physical model for a housing project just outside Prague.
In a short amount of time, I have improved my model making skills greatly. I have done research on modular homes, and micro homes and I have learned a lot about modular design through this. I have also gained skills in ArchiCAD. At the start of the placement, I did not know how to use it and now I am very confident using it!
The location
Prague has been such an amazing city to explore. There is something new around every corner, and there are so many beautiful parks that are a close walk away. Most weekends, we have taken a walk to a new park and experience the amazing scenery that surrounds us. Sadly, due to the pandemic, we have not had the opportunity to meet many locals or other Erasmus students. However, everyone that I am here with and have been living with are amazing, and I could not have asked for a better group of people.
My placement has been so welcoming and friendly that it has made working here so easy and I am extremely grateful.
Cross cultural working
Working here has been extremely fun. The biggest challenge is the language barrier; certain phrases do not exist in English in the way they exist in Czech and vice versa.
In ArchiCAD, I have been using the Czech language version exclusively, because of how their licensing works. This made my learning very slow at first but now I can navigate the program much more easily now I know key phrases and terms from repeated use and have translated important terms myself.
The impact
My research on micro homes has really piqued my interest in creating great, affordable housing for everyone. I want to explore more of Prague and what the city has to offer. It is packed full of beautiful sights that we have yet to run out of new places to go.
