I was able to use this time in Crete to explore the field and learn new techniques. If my future job requires me to go to a different country, I can now say that I have experience of this on my CV.
The motivation
I want to get into documentary making in the future. With this I would travel different countries, with different cultures. I thought this would be the perfect time to go abroad before university, to help me gain confidence and give me an idea of what I might want to do when I finish uni.
The placement
I worked in an office environment but was only there when I needed to do editing. The office was relaxed but professional; everyone was super kind and friendly. It had a beautiful view of the ocean and the blue sky; it was a lovely environment to work at.
I was asked to film many events around the surrounding area. It was amazing to film so much content. I also got to explore their culture and meet and see new people and things.
The placement was close to our hotel, so it was easy and quick to get to every day which was good, as I get anxious.
The location
Rethymno is so beautiful. I had enough time after my work placement to go and explore each day.
My favourite thing to do was go through old town and look at all the independent shops down each side street. The buildings and the culture is what makes Rethymno so nice. Whenever I explained to shop owners that I was doing work experience, they were so friendly and would often give little gifts.
The impact
The placement has helped build my confidence and independence. I am a very anxious girl and often don’t feel like I can be independent. Having to get up each day, go out film and make sure to eat has really helped prepare me for university.
It has also helped me gain experience in the field I want to work in in the future. I was able to use this time in Crete to explore the field and learn new techniques. If my future job requires me to go to a different country, I can now say that I have experience of this on my CV.
