“My advice for future participants is try not to stress and make sure you enjoy the experience of being a new country. Don’t be afraid to come out of your comfort zone and to never be afraid to ask for advice or help. You’re there to learn!”
The motivation
I applied for the placement because I wanted to improve my team-working and communication skills. I also wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone so that I could become more independent in the future.
The placement
During my placement I was given the opportunity to learn how to make maps and find out all about the different areas and transportation systems that exist in Barcelona. It was also interesting to learn about how the transport systems impact the people living within the city.
My biggest learning experience during my placement was learning not be afraid of making mistakes. Making mistakes is part of the learning curve and asking for help really helped me improve the quality of my work. I’m also really proud of the fact that I learnt how to budget without my Mum’s help, and that I became more independent and confident in making my own decisions.
The location
I absolutely loved the city! The city has so much history to it and there is a never-ending supply of beautiful sites to visit. The local people were very welcoming and kind. I also got the chance to try lots of tasty traditional dishes at some amazing restaurants in the city.

The impact
I think that my international work placement will help me professionally and I now feel that I have some great practical work experience under my belt that will stand out when I eventually apply for a university degree in interior design.
My advice for future participants is try not to stress and make sure you enjoy the experience of being a new country. Don’t be afraid to come out of your comfort zone and to never be afraid to ask for advice or help. You’re there to learn!
