The tasks I performed helped me develop strong technical skills as well as learning the importance of precision, patience, and following correct mechanical sequencing to ensure safe and reliable performance from both myself and the bikes.
The motivation
Before going on my placement, I had travelled independently just not out of the UK. I want to keep building my mechanical skills by taking on more complex repairs and continuing to work with bikes so I can become faster, more confident, and more precise.
The placement
During my placement, I carried out a wide range of hands-on bicycle maintenance tasks, including inspecting and replacing brake cables, changing tires and inner tubes, and servicing the chain and drivetrain. Beyond the technical work, the placement strengthened my problem-solving, communication, and time-management abilities. I learned to ask for tools more clearly and break complex jobs into manageable steps.
The location
I liked how my destination exposed me to a completely different environment, culture, and way of working, which made the whole experience feel exciting and refreshing. Being in a new place pushed me to be more independent and adaptable, and I enjoyed exploring the local area and seeing how cycling and maintenance are valued in the community.
The impact
The experience deepened my appreciation for bicycles as sustainable, efficient forms of transport and highlighted how essential proper maintenance is for their longevity. It also exposed me to different working styles and expectations, helping me communicate more clearly and work more efficiently with others. Overall, the experience broadened my perspective and prepared me to perform well in diverse professional settings.
