The motivation

I wanted to gain more experience with working with young people who do not have that many privileges.

The placement

I was doing sports coaching and teaching. My role was to inspire children to stay active in fitness as well as in their academics. I encouraged them to build confidence in themselves.

I worked with younger children on a programme called ‘Learn to Move’. I helped them to make the activities fun, organising them into small groups and  and setting up small competitive races, which boosted their cardio and supported their development.

The location

The most breathtaking scenery I experienced was during the overnight safari trip, where I learned about some magnificent animals in the private game reserve.

I discovered fascinating facts about how animals prey on each other while taking part in a four-hour drive and a sunrise drive the following day.

The impact

My biggest achievement was being allocated a student leader role for my group.  It helped to boost my confidence, and take responsibility to go out of my way to communicate to other authorities.

My next steps are to continue with amateur boxing and, most importantly, to get into the British Army going into the infantry.

Outcomes

  • Improved language skills
  • Exposure to cultural experience
  • Confidence building
  • Improved people skills
