Make the most of your placement, learn as much as you can and have a lot of fun.
The motivation
I’ve left the UK but never travelled abroad independently. I saw this trip as an opportunity to get better knowledge on the business side of engineering and gain experience in an engineering setting.
The placement
My biggest achievement was renting out a bike to a Spanish couple without using any English. While it was difficult, I was happy at the end because I completed the challenge that I put on myself, and it can help me more in the future if I keep learning and putting myself in difficult situations. I also have a lot of experience with fixing bikes from when I was a child so it was enjoyable as I got to rediscover my love for bikes and fixing machines.
The location
The thing I liked most about Valencia is how colourful the city is. All the building had colour and there was a lot of orange trees that added a nice splash of colour in the streets. The bright range of colour improved my average mood as I was happier and sociable compared to being quiet and introverted in London.

The impact
I’ve gained understanding of how businesses work in other countries and I can apply what I’ve learned in Valencia and use that when I start working to potentially make my workplace more efficient or improve working conditions for my employees and co-workers.
