Preparation and support

The project was well organised and communication with the partner in Spain was highly effective, which impacted positively on the support I was able to provide the learners in preparation for and during the project.

Despite the preparation for cultural enrichment, some learners were homesick and missed loved ones. The support they were offered locally was excellent and the team were prompt in offering additional support where necessary, as well as triangulating with home-stay parents when issues arose.

The learning

I had the pleasure to see each learner’s confidence grow. The opportunities they were given in the workplace, and at home, enabled them to develop key skills which have improved their employability; problem solving skills, team-working skills and communication, to name a few.

The group thoroughly enjoyed their time in and out of work. During Spanish classes, they worked in small groups which were streamed by ability, which  impacted positively on their language development. They were able to use the new skills learnt each week at home and in the workplace.

The location

The group  experienced Andalusian culture at its best. The Feria was an excellent, once in a lifetime experience for the group. Many of them had the chance to visit the fair with their host families. As they grew more confident, they travelled to nearby towns and thoroughly enjoyed each experience.

The impact

Learners have had the chance to meet new people and experience new things. This has been hugely beneficial for their confidence and has opened their mind to possibilities they hadn’t thought existed.

The benefits of the project have been significant for all learners. Many have gone on to gain industry employment and have cited the development of their confidence as a key factor in securing their job. Some had the opportunity to develop their independence, where at home they may have heavily relied on family members. The group have gained key life skills which will stay with them forever.
