Placement overview

Name: Kyle
Vocational area: Music (Creative Industries)
Duration: 2 weeks
Location: Barcelona, Spain
  • "This was the first time I had ever left the UK. I wanted to experience life in another country and take photos in another country."

    Kyle, Creatives student, Barcelona

The motivation

This was the first time I had travelled outside of the UK. I wanted to experience life in another country and take photos in another country.

I also wanted to hang out with friends in another country. Working in another country was a great experience.

The placement

My work placement was a cultural appropriation workplace, where people could book studio sessions, recordings, dance sessions, and stage play/acting.

I helped with setting up the studio sessions and recordings, I also helped with the lights for the stage one day, helped with music production, and worked on my mixing.

The location

Walking around Barcelona and taking everything in was very enjoyable; everywhere was a great sight to see.

There were souvenir shops, figurine shops and ramen shops, which was great for me as a fan of anime. I had a lot of fun looking at the products, and buying a few for myself and family.

The impact

My biggest achievement were the mixing sessions; getting past the challenges and getting a high score on my mixes. Having my boss praise me whenever I got past another mixing challenge made me really proud.

Going forward, the mixing sessions will help me greatly in making my music. A good mix can help a lot with the quality of the track.

The experience of working in another country is sure to fit nicely in my CV.

Placement overview

Name: Rita
Age: 21
Duration: 4 weeks
Location: Lebrija, Spain
  • “I have learned so much about myself and also developed my technical skills from this experience and hope to do an apprenticeship in the UK next.”

    Rita, Motor Vehicle student, Lebrija

The motivation

I thought it would be a great opportunity for me to gain some real professional experience whilst travelling with my friends. I did not need to prepare much as everything was sorted for me.

The placement

Most of my tasks involved body work and painting the vehicles but I was also able to do mechanical tasks like replacing the fans, suspensions and oil filters, etc.

The location

Working in a Spanish company allowed me to develop my communication skills as I had to interact with Spanish speaking people on a daily basis.

I was a bit nervous at the start but realised that everyone responded well when I used my body language, and learned some key Spanish phrases. I also loved communicating with locals when my group would explore the area in the evenings.

The best thing about the destination for me was to experience the rich Andalusian culture and local Roman Catholic belief, and view the many related heritage sites.

The impact

I have learned so much about myself and also developed my technical skills from this experience and hope to do an apprenticeship in the UK next. My advice for future participants would be for them to just be themselves and to treat others how they would like to be treated.

My Erasmus+ placement was the first time I had worked in my field and I was able to apply the knowledge that I gained from the course in the company that I worked at.
