Incredible and inspirational learners

I had the enormous pleasure and privilege to organise, supervise and escort ten incredible and inspirational learners from HRUC to participate in their one month Turing Scheme UK placement to the townships in Port Elizabeth, South Africa organised by the incredible charity United Through Sport in partnership with RiSE International.

The placement

Our students have been amazing examples of how incredible young people can be. They have been coaching in primary schools, teaching swimming to many who have never swam before, teaching in classrooms and working in childcare with some of the most underprivileged children. They have been leading their own sessions and being the most incredible ambassadors.

Four of our students also got the amazing chance to coach with the Head Coach of the South Africa Women’s Soccer Team.

I also spent some time teaching and one to one reading with some of the children in the primary schools. This was for me a very special moment for me.

Skills Development..and fun!

We were able to embed the universal Skills Builder Framework as part Skills Builder Partnership to enormous success.

As well as their placements, we participated in:

🦁 – Overnight safari where they saw the Big Five
🏄🏾‍♀️- Surfing and sandboarding lessons in the world’s surf capital, Jeffrey’s Bay
🏏 – Attending the SA T20 cricket Sunrisers EC who are now the champions!

A huge thank you to the incredible Morgan Harlin and his team for all of their support. United Through Sport is a truly remarkable programme and I urge other colleges to get in touch with them to work together to provide meaningful opportunities for further education learners.
