"I learnt so much more than I ever thought I would; about myself, living in a different country, communication skills and new culinary skills."
The motivation
I applied to do an international work placement in the last year of my course as I thought it would be an incredible experience to advance my culinary skills, which it definitely was! I also really looked forward to meeting new people, experiencing how different cultures live in both a personal and a work environment, and increasing my passion for food.
The placement
During my placement at I had to carry out a range of different tasks which varied from preparing and cooking food, plating dishes and generally helping out through service times.
Working alongside the team at was an incredible experience, I couldn’t have asked for a better team to work with. Even though the language barrier was a challenge everyone was so helpful and kind towards me. The team were very welcoming and helped me fit in and gain a better understanding of tapas and the culture in Spain.
The location
Seville is such a beautiful city with scenery, sunshine and good night life. During our days off I spent time by the river with friends chilling out and listening to music, which was lovely. There was an abundance of activities to get involved in. We went as a group to the water park, which was a great day out. The beaches in Cadiz were also a lovely place to relax on days off.

The impact
I learnt so much more than I ever thought I would. I learnt a lot about myself, living in a different country, communication skills and new culinary skills.
My biggest achievement was overcoming the language barrier, and being able to communicate comfortably and effectively with the work team. Nobody in the workplace spoke English, therefore it was important to achieve this as communication is key in the industry. The busy and fast-paced environment has prepared me for future work – it was a learning curve to experience that style of service.
I can take the skills that I learnt with me throughout my career, anywhere in the world and fit right in!
