  • "The experience has inspired me to think differently about what I want to do in the future. I really want to find a job where I can help people"

Maria C, Sports Coaching placement, South Africa

The motivation

I’ve never travelled outside Europe before and I knew it would be a once in a lifetime opportunity. I was a bit nervous before we travelled, as I had to apply for a visa to enter South Africa, but staff at the College were really helpful with all the paperwork.

The placement

I visited 3 to 4 schools per day, working with primary aged kids. I’d never coached before so I was a little nervous. I had to learn how to keep the children engaged and happy. I worked alongside volunteers from other countries and made loads of friends.

The location

I had no idea what South Africa would be like. United Through Sport organised loads of activities each weekend. We did an amazing hike and climbed up some sand dunes to watch the sunset over the sea. We got to visit Jeffrey’s Bay and Mossel Bay, it’s such a beautiful country.

The accommodation was great, we had a pool and a games room, so it was easy to hang out with everyone.

The impact

My mum says I have changed so much, in a good way. I have made friends for life, from all over the world, we are already planning to meet up again.

The experience has inspired me to think differently about what I want to do in the future. I really want to find a job where I can help people, I am exploring options to look at working in victim support.

Placement overview

Name: Rita
Age: 21
Duration: 4 weeks
Location: Lebrija, Spain
  • “I have learned so much about myself and also developed my technical skills from this experience and hope to do an apprenticeship in the UK next.”

    Rita, Motor Vehicle student, Lebrija

The motivation

I thought it would be a great opportunity for me to gain some real professional experience whilst travelling with my friends. I did not need to prepare much as everything was sorted for me.

The placement

Most of my tasks involved body work and painting the vehicles but I was also able to do mechanical tasks like replacing the fans, suspensions and oil filters, etc.

The location

Working in a Spanish company allowed me to develop my communication skills as I had to interact with Spanish speaking people on a daily basis.

I was a bit nervous at the start but realised that everyone responded well when I used my body language, and learned some key Spanish phrases. I also loved communicating with locals when my group would explore the area in the evenings.

The best thing about the destination for me was to experience the rich Andalusian culture and local Roman Catholic belief, and view the many related heritage sites.

The impact

I have learned so much about myself and also developed my technical skills from this experience and hope to do an apprenticeship in the UK next. My advice for future participants would be for them to just be themselves and to treat others how they would like to be treated.

My Erasmus+ placement was the first time I had worked in my field and I was able to apply the knowledge that I gained from the course in the company that I worked at.
