Beyond the friendships, this trip also provided valuable insights into different cultures and perspectives. Experiencing the vibrant traditions and witnessing the beauty of South Africa broadened my understanding of the world.
The motivation
I knew it would be a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn and explore the rich culture, traditions and experience a new lifestyle by being independent and developing my skills and personal growth.
The placement
I volunteered in childcare and educational settings, supported underprivileged children through education, mentorship and care.
In schools, I assisted teacher with teaching and supporting children with fun games and learning activities. I also coached dance, supporting physical development by creating a fun and engaging atmosphere.
Despite how underprivileged areas faced significant difficulties, staff made the most of everything they had. Their creativity and dedication were inspiring – they maximised what they had, using natural and recycled materials for learning activities.
The location
I loved the local people, the breath taking landscapes and wildlife.
I enjoyed living with my roommates as it allowed us to create bonds in ways I never expected. The laughter, late night conversations and support throughout the trip are moments I will always cherish. Whether we were out on excursions, exploring new places, trying local foods, or simply relaxing after a long day.
Beyond the friendships, this trip also provided valuable insights into different cultures and perspectives. Experiencing the vibrant traditions and witnessing the beauty of South Africa broadened my understanding of the world.

The impact
This placement helped me to develop my independence and confidence, and to recognize my strengths. It gave me an opportunity to reflect on how I work with children in my nursery in the UK, and develop professional skills such as leadership, teamwork and critical thinking.
I won many hearts of those young bright smiles by sharing hugs, laughter and moments of connecting, filling every second with warmth and pure joy.
