Vocational area: Sports coaching
Duration: 4 weeks
Location: St Lucia
St Lucia is stunning. Working with the community is completely different to visiting as a tourist. You get to see the island through a different light, and it is honestly the best.
I thought the St Lucia placement would be an exciting way to practice the skills I had developed at college. My course required me to complete work experience, so I thought why try it a different way that would be a once in a lifetime opportunity!
After hearing more about the experience at an open evening, I knew it was exactly what I was looking for and more, so I applied and was one of the lucky ones selected to go.
My main role was sports coaching for children, aged from 3-10. We taught a range of sports, from rugby to swimming. We also helped to build their fundamental life skills, such as communication and teamwork, whilst delivering fun sports activities.
As I play rugby and have a strong rugby background, I was also given the opportunity to help coach the national teams of St Lucia, specifically working with the Under 19s and women’s teams. It was an amazing opportunity to see how those from different countries play and I was able to learn from them as well as sharing some of my own experience.
St Lucia is unlike anywhere that I had visited before. The island is stunning, and seeing it through the eyes of a local was unlike anything that I will ever get to experience. Working with the community is completely different to visiting as a tourist. You get to see the island through a different light, and it is honestly the best.
I was fortunate enough to be in the country for their carnival, and participated in the parade at 4am, walking through the city whilst getting completely covered in mud. It was the best experience and something that I will never forget!
My biggest learning experience was overcoming the challenges of working with young children. I had prior coaching experience but with teenagers, so working with young kids was new for me. I was really proud to see how much the kids developed during the time I was there.
This placement stretched me in ways that I had never been before, helping me to developing my skills in a unique way.
I am currently studying at university, and find that I approach situations differently to how I would have done before thanks to my experience abroad.
