The motivation

I applied for the placement to gain an experience like no other: I wanted to see how I would do truly relying on myself to attend work, have a social life and take care of myself without a safety net.

I also wanted to discover a new culture and immerse myself as much as I could.

The placement

My work placement was very different to one that I had done in the UK.

Travel agencies in Crete work on an excursion only basis making it a bit simpler to work. I learnt a lot about the excursions we provided, the prices and dates that we ran them and even participated in a few.

Visiting the places which the travel agency provided was a spectacular way to make the most of my time abroad and helped me understand how to explain excursion as well as give helpful tips to customers interested in joining the excursion.

I also put my language skills to use. As I know Polish, English and Spanish, it meant it was easier to communicate with tourists who didn’t speak Greek or struggled with English.

The location

The best thing about Rethymno/Crete is that I felt safe. There are little to no robberies, the locals are kind and caring and even as a young female there was no real harassment from men.

During this whole month I was not afraid to walk around by myself or do whatever I wanted.

My biggest learning experience was adapting to the culture and trying to learn Greek. Although I don’t know full sentences, I could tell that each time I understood a little more like how are you or small words that people would
say down the street like “good” or “thank you” which felt like a big achievement.

The impact

I do think that going through a month of disconnecting from my day-to-day life and having to adapt to a new job will help me massively in the future.
