Lucky students from HRUC will soon be escaping the depths of winter and heading to South Africa..
Last week we visited our partners, United Through Sport, in South Africa, to prepare for our first placements there, in Gqberha (Port Elizabeth).
We had the opportunity to meet the team, check out where the group will stay and discuss specific student needs. We sat in on the volunteer induction and visited the schools that students will be working in.
We will be sending 10 students from HRUC, who are currently studying health & social care, uniformed services and sport. They will be delivering sports coaching and life skills sessions to children in schools in disadvantaged communities in and around Gqberha.
Trip of a lifetime!
They will join the UTS Mass Participant programme, which aims to give as many children as possible the opportunity to participate in regular sports activities. The programme uses structured coaching as the foundation to provide a holistic education that is otherwise not provided by the schools (physical education is not on the national curriculum in South Africa). UTS work with a range of local partners, including Siya Phakarma, the foundation of Siya Kelosi, the much loved Rugby Captain of South Africa’s Springboks.
We would like to thank all the staff at UTS for making this such a memorable experience – we are so excited about sending our first group of students to South Africa and we have no doubt this will be a trip of a lifetime!
